A3 Full Weekend Southbound and Northbound Closure Confirmed - 9pm Friday 13th to 5.30am Monday 16th October
An unprecedented full weekend closure on the A3 up to the M25 has been planned, which is likely to cause chaos in Surrey, as a huge diversion has been organised for drivers to make their way around.
The route will be closed on the A3 at Ripley Bypass at Burntcommon, up to junction 10 at the M25.
However, a diversion has been put into place, away from the closed stretch of road, which is a whopping 19-mile diversion, which could take around 38 minutes to complete.
Drivers coming from near the M25’s junction 10, are asked to come off at junction 9, at Leatherhead.
National Highways say:
"Our improvements will reduce congestion, create a smoother flow of traffic and provide safer journeys for thousands every day.
National Highways is closing the A3 in both directions:
- The A3 will be closed northbound from the B2215/A247 exit at Ripley to the M25 junction 10.
- The A3 will be closed southbound from the M25 junction 10 to the A247 at Burntcommon
Why is the A3 subject to so many closures?
Junction 10 is the busiest section of the M25 with over 300,000 vehicles passing through every day.
National Highways say:
"Our improvements will reduce congestion, create a smoother flow of traffic and provide safer journeys for thousands every day.
Our scheme will see:
- New and safer routes for cyclists, pedestrians and horse-riders
- An additional lane on the A3 in both directions from Ockham and Painshill junctions towards the M25
- A larger roundabout with extra lanes to increase capacity
- Free flow left turns at all four corners of the junction
- Improvements to the A245 Seven Hills junction and Painshill roundabout
- Safer access to Old Lane, Elm Lane, Heyswood campsite and San Domenico
- Improvements to the local environment and wildlife "
Major heathland restoration and A3 junction upgrade gets underway.
